Zhang Tonglu
Zhang Tonglu, 1942-2022, Chinese arts and crafts master of cloisonné. Having mastered all the skills of cloisonné, he achieved the distinction of “grand master,” and was honored as "top expert of Chinese cloisonné."
For more than 60 years, Master Zhang Tonglu devoted himself to this craft and played an important role in the protection and innovation of cloisonné art, winning the title of "grand master." He was honored as a representative inheritor of "China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage," and made outstanding and significant contributions to non-material cultural arts by combining traditional technology with modern creativity. Zhang Tonglu's works are widely praised for their exquisite details and dynamic use of color, making him a key figure in the cloisonné craft.
Master Zhang Tonglu's achievements include the creation of a world-renowned Chinese cloisonné porcelain vase, titled "Peace Vase," which was exhibited permanently at the United Nations. This national gift symbolizes global harmony and brings traditional Chinese art to the world stage, allowing the world to appreciate the beauty of Chinese craftsmanship.
In recognition of his contribution to art, another work, "Tai Ping You Xiang," an artwork featuring elephants supporting a vase, was chosen to represent the world's arts and crafts category, and was memorialized by having it’s image embedded upon a digital microchip, which was taken to and permanently installed on the International Space Station.
His skills, as intangible cultural heritage, continue to be passed on through his daughter, son, and apprentices, who are also recognized as cloisonné masters, helping to protect and promote this ancient art form. Master Zhang Tongpu's influence in the field of Chinese cloisonné is unparalleled.
